Dr. Charles Francis Potter 1885-1962

Dr. Charles Francis Potter, minister, author, and lecturer, collected tongue twisters for many years and was considered the outstanding authority for this kind of folklore in America. His collection of folk rimes, especially old American verse from the oral tradition, reportedly numbered over thirty thousand. Dr. Potter was for many years the minister of various Unitarian churches in Canada, Massachusetts, and New York City and was a foremost Bible scholar. He read and studied the Bible in many languages and in 1925 was Clarence Darrow's "Bible Expert" at the Scopes trial in Dayton, Tennessee. He died in 1962 in New York City.
