Joe Rea Phillips has devoted many years to both performing and teaching guitar. He holds both the Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in performance and pedagogy from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. He is presently Senior Artist Teacher of Guitar at the Blair School of Music of Vanderbilt University where he also serves as Assistant to the Dean. His varied performance experience ranges from classical chamber music to new jazz. His guitar duo with widely recognized guitarist, Stan Lassiter, has performed together since 1974. Music of the Lassiter and Phillips Duo combines elements of flamenco, classical, folk, and jazz to create music without any boundaries. Joe Rea Phillips has also performed classical chamber music with his mentor and worldly acclaimed guitarist, John Johns .
Joe Rea Phillips teaches collegiate, pre-collegiate, and adult students in the guitar program at the Blair School of Music. Joe Rea and colleague, John Johns, have many students in the program ranging from guitar majors, minors, chamber music, and students from all areas of the university enrolled in introductory guitar group instruction. Mr. Phillips has written two method books that are used by his students in Blair's introduction to guitar courses. He has also applied his many years of training in Chinese martial arts such as Tai Chi Chuan, Pa Kua Chang, and others to create a course at Vanderbilt called "Tai Chi for Musicians". This course is designed to help musicians to prevent and even help in the healing process of musicians that suffer from overuse syndrome.
