Culture and Cognition

Implications for Theory and Method

The book deals with some central issues of method and theory in the area of Culture and Cognition. It engages both, anthropology and psychology arguing that any successful endeavor in Culture and Cognition must embrace insights from both fields. Specific methods of data gathering and analysis are discussed and put into the context of wider research strategies for understanding cross-cultural differences. The book intends to establish the ground for sensible cultural and cross-cultural research that will provide important insights into both cultural processes in cognition and cognitive aspects of culture. As such it engages the relevant literature from both fields. The book uses examples from literature, but draws heavily on the author’s extensive research experience in different cultural settings. It provides a detailed discussion of theoretical implications of certain research agendas and ongoing discussions in the two fields. As such it offers constructive criticism to some of the major weaknesses of the two fields, anthropology and psychology.
