Most of my research takes place among Maya speakers of Mexico and Guatemala (mostly Tzotzil Maya of Chiapas) on topics such as folkbiological knowledge, religion, ethnomedicine, ethnohistory, and language.

Research among the Lacandon

Maya, Mexico

My research program addresses the general topic of culture and cognition, a theme central to socio-cultural anthropology. Within this research I explore social processes (such as cultural change, development of knowledge…) and their effects on knowledge distribution and high level cognition. Profiting from my work in the Cognitive Sciences / Psychology, I combine experimental research (from the Cognitive Sciences) with long term field research based on participant observation. Consequently, findings address both the field of Mesoamerican (Maya) ethnography, as well as the more theoretical interests of social theory and high level cognition. Most of the research is collaborative in nature, including both faculty from other disciplines and students.
